Juru Ornella, a singer who previously competed in Miss Rwanda 2019, is among 57 contestants vying to be one of 10 finalists heading to Dubai for the Miss Black Festival. This is the inaugural year for the competition, which began with online submissions and saw over 400 girls from around the world register.

The festival aims to empower black girls, awarding $15,000 to the top project and $5,000 to the second and third places.

Ornella, known for songs like 'Yoga,' told InyaRwanda that her decision to enter Miss Black Festival came after not advancing in previous beauty contests due to height requirements. She noted that Miss Black Festival does not have such restrictions, encouraging her to participate. "I have always participated in beauty contests and wanted to try Miss Black Festival because I believe I can succeed here," she said.

Despite her music career, Ornella believes that winning the competition would open new doors for her, both in her music and her planned project on mental health. She explained that her project focuses on mental health awareness because of her personal experiences. "I submitted a project on mental health because I have faced such challenges, so I speak from experience," she added.

Ornella hopes that winning Miss Black Festival will help her campaign to change societal perceptions about mental health and encourage families to discuss these issues with young people. She also aims to establish entertainment clubs to engage the youth, providing employment opportunities and helping them lead fulfilling lives.
