President Paul Kagame has emphasized that sustainable development cannot be achieved without collective global cooperation. He delivered this message on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, a major international forum on sustainable development held in Abu Dhabi.
Kagame
joined the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al
Nahyan, along with other world leaders and government officials, to officially
open the event.
During
the opening ceremony, 11 innovators were honored with the prestigious Zayed
Sustainability Prize for their outstanding contributions to sustainable
solutions. The week-long event, led by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has
attracted global leaders, industry experts, and technology innovators to
discuss pathways toward a sustainable future.
In
his speech, President Kagame highlighted Africa’s slow progress in achieving
sustainable development goals due to weak policy implementation. He
stated, “Agreed policies are not being effectively implemented, yet we
continue to engage in endless discussions about what needs to be done.” Kagame
also emphasized Rwanda’s proactive steps in fostering an investor-friendly
environment.
“We
launched the Rwanda Innovation Fund (RIF) to support innovative startups and
attract global investment. This approach has led to tangible innovations across
various sectors,” he
explained. Kagame also shared Rwanda’s advancements in technology, particularly
in agriculture data collection and using drones for medical deliveries.
He
added, “We have invested in electric vehicles and implemented digital
payment systems for public transport.” Kagame further advocated for
nuclear energy as a reliable power source, revealing Rwanda’s plans to
establish small nuclear power plants as part of its energy diversification
strategy.
President
Kagame concluded by stressing the need for unity in achieving global
sustainability goals. “We believe sustainable development is a shared
responsibility. No country can achieve it alone. We must learn from past mistakes
and move beyond policies that slow us down,” he urged. The Abu Dhabi
Sustainability Week brings together world leaders, businesses, NGOs,
innovators, and other stakeholders to address global challenges, promote clean
energy, and accelerate socio-economic development through technology.
