Africa CDC has praised Rwanda for its exceptional handling of the Marburg virus outbreak, citing it as a model for other African countries in epidemic prevention. This commendation was made during the opening of the Biashara Afrika Forum, a key event aimed at advancing trade across Africa through the Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director
General of Africa CDC, applauded Rwanda’s swift actions in containing the
virus, stating, "Rwanda’s response has been impressive. From what I have
observed, they’ve taken all the necessary steps. Rwanda is a beacon of hope for
Africa in epidemic management."
President Paul Kagame,
addressing the forum attendees, also expressed his gratitude to the over 1,200
delegates for attending the event, despite the ongoing Marburg outbreak. He
emphasized that Rwanda is doing everything possible to control the virus, but
also noted that collaboration with Africa CDC and other partners is crucial to
overcoming the challenge.
Rwanda’s government
continues to urge citizens to remain calm and maintain preventive measures like
regular handwashing and avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals.
Vaccination efforts began on October 6, prioritizing healthcare workers.
As of October 9, 2024,
the Ministry of Health reported 58 confirmed cases, 13 deaths, and 12
recoveries from the Marburg virus. Efforts to control the outbreak remain
strong with ongoing vaccination and public health interventions.
