The Governor of Rwanda’s Northern Province, Mugabowagahunde Maurice, revealed that over Rwf 5.1 billion has been invested in projects benefiting communities around Volcanoes National Park. The funds aim to share the benefits of tourism and biodiversity conservation with local residents.
Speaking on September 25,
2024, at a press briefing in Kigali, ahead of the 20th annual Kwita Izina
Gorilla Naming Ceremony, Governor Mugabowagahunde highlighted the
transformative role tourism has played in the region’s development. The event
was held alongside key figures from Rwanda’s Development Board (RDB) and
tourism industry leaders.
Mugabowagahunde noted
that the Northern Province, especially districts bordering the park, has seen
significant progress due to tourism revenue. Communities have embraced
conservation, with projects ranging from agriculture and livestock to
infrastructure like schools, health centers, and water access.
The governor emphasized
that tourism, particularly gorilla conservation, has created long-lasting
benefits. These projects not only improve local livelihoods but also strengthen
Rwanda’s global reputation as a premier ecotourism destination.
