Rwanda has introduced two new banknotes: the 5,000 Frw and the 2,000 Frw. The new 5,000 Frw note features an image of the Kigali Convention Center, while the 2,000 Frw note showcases a depiction of the hills around Lake Kivu.
The new 5,000 Frw
banknote measures 145 x mm and prominently displays the Rwandan coat of
arms and the letters "BNR" beneath it. The note is primarily pink in
color and has the text "BANKI NKURU Y’U RWANDA" at the top, with
"Iyi noti yemewe n’amategeko" below, and "AMAFARANGA IBIHUMBI
BITANU" at the bottom.
Additional features of
the 5,000 Frw note include the signature of the Central Bank Governor and
Deputy Governor, the issue date "28.06.2024," and a holographic image
of a gorilla that changes color when tilted.
The introduction of these new banknotes was officially authorized by a Presidential Order on August 29, 2024, marking a significant update to Rwanda’s currency.
