The Rwandan music star Mugisha Benjamin, popularly known as The Ben, and his wife Uwicyeza Pamella are celebrating the birth of their first child.
The couple welcomed a baby girl named Mugisha Paris on the night of March 18, 2025, in Brussels, Belgium. The news comes just over a year after their glamorous wedding in December 2023.
The Ben had previously
announced during Bwiza’s album launch concert in Belgium that they were
expecting a daughter. Pamella was even present on stage with him, sharing the
joy with their fans. The couple had considered different countries for their
child's birth, including Canada and France, but ultimately, their daughter was
born in Belgium.
Pamella gave birth at Edith Cavell Hospital in Brussels,
where she had gone for a routine check-up. Upon arrival, doctors determined she
was about to give birth and decided to keep her at the hospital until she
safely delivered. The news of their daughter's arrival was made public on March
19, 2025.
With Mugisha Paris being born in Belgium,
the question of her nationality arises. Unlike some countries that grant
automatic citizenship to children born on their soil (jus soli), Belgium follows jus sanguinis, meaning citizenship is primarily passed down
through bloodline rather than birthplace. This means that since neither The Ben
nor Pamella are Belgian citizens or have lived in Belgium for over ten years
before their child's birth, Paris does not automatically qualify for Belgian
citizenship.
According to Belgian
nationality laws, particularly Article 10 of the Code de la nationalité belge, a child born in Belgium can
receive Belgian citizenship if at least one parent was born in Belgium and
lived there for at least five of the ten years preceding the child’s birth.
Another option outlined in Article 11bis allows foreign-born children to apply
for Belgian nationality before turning 12, provided one parent has legally
resided in Belgium for at least ten years.
Additionally, Article
12bis states that a child born in Belgium can apply for citizenship upon
turning 18 if they have continuously lived there in a legally recognized
manner. This means that if Mugisha
Paris grows up in Belgium, she may have the opportunity to acquire
Belgian nationality when she reaches adulthood.
While Paris' citizenship
status is yet to be determined, her birth remains a joyous milestone for The
Ben and Pamella. The couple, who have been in Belgium for some time due to The
Ben’s participation in Bwiza’s album launch, are now entering a new chapter of
their lives as parents. Fans and fellow celebrities have flooded social media
with congratulatory messages, celebrating the birth of the newest member of
their family.
