Rwanda’s national football team, Amavubi, will host Libya on Thursday, November 14, 2024, in a crucial fifth match of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers. With the tournament set to take place in Morocco, Rwanda’s qualification hopes hinge on securing a win against Libya and monitoring Benin's results in their remaining games.
For the Amavubi, a
victory against Libya is essential to keep pace with Benin, who currently sits
just one point ahead in Group D. Nigeria, leading the group with an impressive
10 points, has already qualified, leaving Rwanda and Benin to battle for the
second qualifying spot.
Amavubi’s recent win over
Benin on October 15 revived Rwanda’s hopes, cutting the gap between them and
Benin to a single point. While Benin currently holds six points, Rwanda trails
with five. Libya, with just two points, is effectively out of the race, making
their remaining matches a last chance to play spoiler in Group D.
After Libya, Rwanda will
face their toughest challenge yet: an away game against Nigeria in Lagos.
Meanwhile, Benin still has two games, including a difficult match against
Nigeria and an easier one against Libya, who have struggled throughout the
qualifiers.
To qualify, Rwanda needs
to secure maximum points in their two remaining matches and hope Benin slips
up. In a scenario where both teams end with equal points, Benin holds the
tiebreaker based on head-to-head results, making every point crucial for the
Amavubi.
If Rwanda manages to
defeat Libya on Thursday and Benin loses to Nigeria, the Amavubi would leap
into second place with eight points, placing them in a favorable position going
into the final round. However, a draw or loss against Libya could make
qualification nearly impossible, as Benin only needs a single win to edge
Rwanda out.
As the stakes intensify,
fans across Rwanda are eagerly awaiting Thursday's match, hoping the Amavubi
can deliver a win and keep their AFCON dreams alive.
