Grammy-winning artist John Legend is set to perform in Kigali, Rwanda, as part of the Move Africa concert series on February 21, 2025. After his Kigali show, Legend will continue the tour in Lagos, Nigeria, on February 25, 2025.
The announcement was made
on Tuesday, December 16, 2024, by Global Citizen, the organization
behind these celebrated events.
This marks the second
time the Move Africa series will be held in Rwanda, following
its 2023 edition featuring American rapper Kendrick Lamar. The concerts aim to
highlight African cultural industries while tackling key issues like health,
environmental sustainability, and economic opportunities for future
generations.
Expressing his
excitement, John Legend stated, “This concert is more than just
entertainment; it’s a platform to create jobs, opportunities, and empower youth
by strengthening cultural industries. Africa has a rich cultural legacy, and
I’m honored to play a role in shaping its musical future.” Legend,
known for albums such as Get Lifted, Love in the Future,
and Legend, has garnered global acclaim with hits like “All of Me”
and “Ordinary People.”
In 2023, Move
Africa left a lasting impact in Kigali when Kendrick Lamar’s
electrifying performance brought together African stars such as Bruce Melodie,
Zuchu, and Ariel Wayz. President Paul Kagame praised the event for celebrating
local talent, stating, “Africa has talent. What they often lack are
opportunities and support.”
Move Africa,
part of Global Citizen’s advocacy efforts, seeks to mobilize
leaders to address Africa’s pressing issues while promoting cultural exchange.
Over the years, Global Citizen has hosted global superstars
like Beyoncé, Usher, and Ed Sheeran in major African cities, including
Johannesburg, Lagos, and Accra.
With Kigali’s BK Arena
set to host the highly anticipated event, Move Africa 2025
promises a blend of international and local artistry, offering an unforgettable
experience while driving positive change across the continent.
