Lt Col Simon Kabera, Deputy Spokesperson of the Rwanda Defence Force, recently shared his personal journey to joining the liberation struggle at just 18. Speaking at the “Meet Me Tonight” event during the Gen-Z Comedy show in Kigali on October 3, 2024.
He encouraged the youth to protect the progress Rwanda has made, drawing from his experience of fighting to free the country, and reflected on growing up as a refugee and how his father often spoke of Rwanda as a land of "milk and honey," which inspired him to fight for its freedom.
He highlighted the sacrifices made
by young Rwandans, including himself, who joined the struggle to liberate the
country, ensuring peace and stability for future generations.
Lt Col Kabera emphasized
that Rwanda’s current peace and security are the result of these sacrifices. He
urged the youth to cherish the opportunities they have today, such as access to
education and freedom to live and work wherever they choose within the country.
He also noted that despite leaving school to fight in the war, he later
returned to complete his education, illustrating the importance of resilience
and dedication.
Lt Col Kabera's message to the
youth was clear: they are the future of Rwanda, and it is their responsibility
to continue building on the foundation laid by those who fought for the
country’s freedom. He stressed the importance of knowing and sharing Rwanda’s
history, as this will empower them to shape a better future.
Concluding his remarks,
Kabera reminded the youth that Rwanda offers equal opportunities for all its
citizens, encouraging them to take full advantage of these privileges and
ensure the country remains a safe, secure, and prosperous nation for
generations to come.
