In a late-night post on Sunday, September 22, 2024, Dr. Utumatwishima Jean Nepo Abdallah, Minister of Youth and Arts Development, responded to artist and journalist Nyarwaya Innocent, known as Yago. Yago had reached out after the Minister’s remarks about “Big Energy” during a peace event earlier that day.
Minister Utumatwishima
clarified that he was open to constructive dialogue with Yago’s fans but warned
that any deviation from proper conduct would be dealt with.
The Minister’s comments
came after Yago explained that “Big Energy” refers to his fanbase, not a
radical group as some may have perceived. Yago highlighted that these
supporters back his work in music and media, distancing himself from the notion
of leading any rebellious movement. In response, Minister Utumatwishima
expressed understanding but emphasized the need for fans to be guided
appropriately.
“I am ready to talk with
your fans and show them what they need to correct in supporting you,” the
Minister said, reiterating his intention to promote a healthy relationship
between artists and their supporters. He also noted that he personally attended
Yago’s December 2023 concert in Kigali to show his support.
However, Utumatwishima
was firm in his stance on accountability, warning that those who stray from
acceptable behavior will face consequences. He concluded by assuring that the
challenges in Rwanda’s showbiz scene will soon be addressed collaboratively,
setting things on the right path.
