In African football, the names of coaches who have played a significant role in developing players' talents are not many. However, Adel Amrouche is among those who have contributed to the growth of football on the continent.
On Sunday, March 2, 2025, the Rwanda Football
Federation (FERWAFA) announced that Algerian-born Adel Amrouche is the new head
coach of the Amavubi national team, replacing Frank Spittler. He will be
assisted by Eric Nshimiyimana and German coach Dr. Carolin Braun.
Amrouche, an Algerian by birth but a Belgian
citizen, has had an exceptional journey that has elevated him to the ranks of
top football coaches in Africa.
Adel Amrouche was born in Kouba, Algeria, on
March 7, 1968. He began playing football at a young age, specializing as a
defensive midfielder.
He played for major clubs such as CR
Belouizdad and JS Kabylie in his youth before moving to OMR El Anasser and USM
Alger. Later, he moved to Europe, where he played for Favoritner AC (Austria),
RAA Louvière, RAEC Mons, Termonde, and SK Lombeek-Liedekerke in Belgium.
After retiring as a player, Amrouche pursued
a coaching career. He began as a technical director at FCA Brussels in 1995
before moving to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, where he spent six years in the
same role.
After proving himself as a competent coach in
Europe, he transitioned to Africa, where he first coached DC Motema Pembe in
the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In 2004, he was appointed as the head coach
of Equatorial Guinea’s national team but had a short stint before moving to
Gençlerbirliği SK in Turkey. He later returned to Motema Pembe.
Amrouche continued to showcase his coaching
expertise and was given the responsibility of coaching Burundi’s national team
from 2007 to 2012. During his tenure, he helped the team rise to prominence on
the international stage. Following his success with Burundi, he moved to Kenya,
guiding the team to a strong performance in the 2013 CECAFA Kagame Cup.
After his tenure with Kenya, he went on to
coach various teams and national squads, including Libya (2018), Botswana
(2019–2022), Yemen (2022–2023), Tanzania (2023–2024), and now Rwanda’s national
team.
Amrouche is known for his strong leadership
approach and his emphasis on tactical discipline, physical fitness, and
teamwork. He prefers a playing style that involves high-intensity pressing,
short passes, and wing-based attacks.
Throughout his coaching career, he has often
been criticized for his strict personality, but his disciplined approach has
made him a sought-after coach for national teams and clubs. He holds a UEFA Pro
License coaching certificate and studied at the Higher Institute of Science and
Technology of Sport.
On March 2, 2025, FERWAFA officially
appointed Amrouche as the new head coach of Rwanda’s national team. His
appointment has generated excitement and curiosity among Amavubi fans, as many
are eager to see how he will elevate the team’s performance and help them
qualify for major tournaments.
As the head coach, he faces a significant
challenge in maintaining the progress made under German coach Torsten Frank
Spittler. Rwanda currently leads Group C in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers,
ahead of football giants such as Nigeria, Benin, South Africa, Lesotho, and
Zimbabwe.
With his vast experience and tactical
expertise, Amrouche will aim to guide Rwanda to new heights and secure a
historic World Cup qualification.
