Eight semi-finals as they await the results of the second-leg matches.teams are still in the competition, but none of them are certain about advancing to the
On Thursday, February 27, 2025, the
first-leg matches of the Peace Cup quarter-finals concluded. One of the most
anticipated clashes was Gasogi United hosting APR FC, a match that ended with
the army side securing a victory in front of Gasogi United fans.
The encounter between APR FC and
Gasogi United in the quarter-finals held significant weight, as the two teams
also faced off at this stage last season, with Gasogi United ultimately
eliminating APR FC.
This time, APR FC made a strong
start in the first leg, securing a 1-0 win away from home thanks to an early
goal scored by Niyibizi Ramadhan in the first minute.
With this away victory, APR FC holds
a strong advantage heading into the second leg. For Gasogi United to eliminate
APR FC, they will need to win by more than one goal. Any draw in the second leg
will see APR FC advance to the semi-finals. If Gasogi United wins 1-0, the
match will go to a penalty shootout.
While APR FC celebrated an away win,
their rivals Rayon Sports had a tougher time, drawing 2-2 against Gorilla FC at
home.
Rayon Sports had to come from behind
to secure the draw, with Biramahire Abeddy scoring the equalizer. Gorilla FC
had initially taken a 2-0 lead with goals from Nsanzimfura Keddy and Ndikumana
Landly.
This draw puts Rayon Sports at a
disadvantage, as they conceded two goals at home. In African competitions, the
away goals rule still applies, meaning Rayon Sports must win the second leg
outright to progress. If they fail to win, their only hope is to secure a
high-scoring draw (above 2-2) or take the game to penalties.
Meanwhile, Police FC secured a
crucial 2-1 home victory against AS Kigali. Goals from Bigirimana Abedy and Ani
Elijah helped them overturn an early own goal by their goalkeeper.
Police FC, the defending champions
of the Peace Cup, faces a big challenge to retain their title after winning
last year’s final 2-1 against Bugesera.
To advance past AS Kigali, Police FC
needs at least a draw or another win. However, AS Kigali has the advantage of
an away goal, meaning that a 1-0 win in the second leg would see them eliminate
Police FC.
In another quarter-final match,
Amagaju FC secured a strong 2-0 home victory against Mukura VS at Huye
International Stadium, giving them an important lead going into the return leg.
The semi-final matchups will be
determined as follows: The winner between Police FC and AS Kigali will face the
winner of APR FC vs. Gasogi United. The winner between Gorilla FC and Rayon
Sports will play against the winner of Mukura VS vs. Amagaju FC.
