Alfred-Aubin Mugenzi, popularly known as Kigingi, one of East Africa's top comedians, has expressed his desire for the revival of the Seka Live comedy shows. He credits the platform for inspiring his annual "Kigingi Summer Comedy" event held in Burundi.
Kigingi, who is married
to a Rwandan, highlighted the impact Seka Live had on his career, saying,
"Seka Live was one of the things that motivated me to start 'Kigingi
Summer Comedy.' Watching how they organized their shows made me realize I could
create something similar in Burundi during the summer."
The Seka Live events, organized by Arthur Nation, were a cultural highlight in Rwanda, bringing global comedy stars like Anne Kansiime, Alex Muhangi, Eric Omondi, and Salvador to Kigali.
These shows also elevated local talents such as Patrick Rusine, now
a household name in Rwanda. However, the shows have been on hold for over a
year due to other commitments by Arthur Nation.
Kigingi noted the
importance of Seka Live in giving a platform to rising comedians and
entertaining audiences with top-tier performances. "This festival brought
international comedians we only saw on YouTube to our stage. It shaped my
career and gave many others opportunities to shine. I believe it deserves to
return," he stated.
He also revealed that
discussions have been ongoing to bring global comedy icon Trevor Noah to
Kigali, further emphasizing the festival's potential. "Seka Live had
reached a significant level in the region. I urge Arthur to revive it, it’s
more than a comedy show; it’s a cultural movement," Kigingi added.
With a legacy of uniting
global and local comedians, Seka Live holds a special place in East Africa’s
comedy scene, and fans, including Kigingi, hope to see its comeback soon.
