Rwandan artist Kitoko Bibarwa, widely known as Kitoko, has reimagined 'Tiro', a classic song by Burundian singer Bahaga. Kitoko, now based in the UK, revealed his deep connection to the track, sharing that it held a special place in his childhood memories, influenced by a parent who loved the song.
Released on Friday,
November 15, 2024, Kitoko’s version incorporates modern instrumentation while
preserving the soulful essence of the original. “I remade this song because
Bahaga is someone I greatly admire, and I loved this song deeply,” Kitoko told
InyaRwanda. He added, “It’s been a favorite since my childhood, and I recall
one of my parents playing it often, which made me love it even
more.”
'Tiro' was a massive hit
in Burundi and resonated across East Africa. Kitoko sought Bahaga’s blessing
before starting the project. “When I first spoke to Bahaga, this was the first
thing I requested, and he gladly agreed,” Kitoko explained.
The music video, shot in
Belgium over three days, was directed by Julien Bmjizzo, a frequent
collaborator. Kitoko filmed in two regions of Belgium and worked with a local
actress selected by the video team.
While 'Tiro' won’t be
part of Kitoko’s upcoming album, he described it as a standalone project
inspired by personal passion. “This song is special and comes from a place of
genuine love,” he said.
Kitoko, who rose to fame
in 2008 with his hit 'Ikiragi', remains a beloved figure in Rwandan music. His
nostalgic take on ‘Tiro’ promises to strengthen his bond with fans and
introduce the timeless classic to a new generation.
