In a night departure from Kigali International Airport on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, Rwandan traditional music artists Massamba Intore and Ruti Joël set off on different musical journeys to Europe.
While they shared a flight, their destinations
diverged; Massamba Intore headed to Spain for music-related engagements, while
Ruti Joël continued to Brussels, Belgium, for the much-anticipated “Ijoro rya
Gakondo” concert featuring Rwandan artists based in Europe.
This trip marks Ruti
Joël’s debut performance in Belgium, an opportunity he describes as deeply
meaningful. Known for his admiration of Massamba Intore, Ruti often calls him a
mentor in music, and he was visibly moved to embark on this journey alongside
him. “It’s a privilege to travel and perform with someone I consider a father
in music,” Ruti shared with InyaRwanda.
Massamba Intore, who has
previously performed in Belgium, also recognizes Ruti Joël as a custodian of
traditional music. In a recent interview, he remarked, “Ruti embodies the
essence of our music. I trust him to carry forward our cultural legacy.” Ruti
Joël’s talent and dedication even earned him a prominent role in Massamba’s
40th-anniversary concert “3040 y’ubutore” earlier this year, where he showcased
his unique style inspired by his mentor.
The “Ijoro rya Gakondo”
concert, scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024, will feature Ruti Joël as
the lead performer. Joining him on stage will be the Icyeza Cultural Troupe,
artist Lionel Sentore, Burundian drummers, and DJs such as Princess Flor and
Saido, promising a dynamic cultural celebration. Ruti expressed his excitement
for this milestone performance, stating, “This is my first concert in Belgium,
and I’m thrilled to connect with fans. They can expect an unforgettable
experience.”
Ruti’s visit to Belgium
aligns with his ongoing tour promoting his debut album, ‘Musomandera’, released
in January 2023. The album, consisting of ten songs, captures his journey in
traditional music with popular tracks like “Rwagasabo” and “Ibihame.”
“Performing these songs for Rwandans abroad is an extension of my album’s
message, connecting with fans wherever they are,” he explained.
For both Massamba and
Ruti, this journey is about more than music—it’s a dedication to cultural
preservation and outreach. As Ruti’s career flourishes, he continues to honor
the guidance of figures like Massamba Intore, ensuring that Rwandan traditional
music resonates across borders.
