Popular Rwandan rapper Ish Kevin voiced disappointment over the lack of music awards in Rwanda, setting his sights on international accolades like the Grammy.
Speaking at the Diva
Beauty Awards on Sunday, October 27, 2024, Kevin, who performed at the event
held at Kigali’s Mundi Center, shared his aspirations with InyaRwanda Tv,
stating, “In Rwanda, there are no music awards. Awards like the Grammys, BET,
and MTV—that’s where I’m focused.”
The Diva Beauty Awards ceremony celebrated achievements in Rwanda’s beauty industry, with Shaddyboo taking home the top prize, “Queen of Beauty,” alongside a six-million Rwandan francs award.
The event highlighted the importance of recognizing local talent,
a sentiment echoed by Kevin, who urged media outlets to focus on artists’
positive contributions to the industry.
Addressing past
controversies, Kevin encouraged the media to prioritize artists’ successes
rather than controversies. “Support Rwandan music. Let’s stop tearing down
artists,” he urged, calling for a more constructive approach to promoting the
music scene.
The evening saw Kevin
energize the crowd with hits like “Amakosi,” a song that has resonated deeply
with fans. Since starting his music career in 2017, Kevin has grown popular,
receiving international recognition, including a Guinness World Record mention
for online rapping.
In recent years, he’s
also gained global attention for songs like “No Cap,” which appeared on GRM
Daily’s list of top Drill tracks. As he aims for milestones on the world stage,
Kevin’s ambition reflects his dedication to taking Rwandan music to new
heights.
