Traditional Rwandan artist Lionel Sentore, based in Belgium, has announced the release of his first album, “Uwangabiye.” The album, named after his hit single, holds special significance for Sentore as it reflects the impact the song had during the campaign for President Paul Kagame’s re-election.
The 12-track album
features collaborations with prominent artists such as Mike Kayihura, Angela,
and Boule Mpanya. Sentore explained that his song “Uwangabiye,” which was
released six years ago, became a major hit during the presidential elections
and earned him the opportunity to perform in front of President Kagame and the
First Lady, Jeannette Kagame. He described the song as a tribute to those who
have shaped his life, including his parents, his country, and President
Kagame.
“I named my album after
‘Uwangabiye’ because it’s a song that changed my music journey. Performing it
in front of the President was an honor, and it symbolizes my deep connection to
my roots and the people who have supported me,” Sentore said.
The album features a mix
of genres, including gospel, with artists like Elyse from Brussels contributing
to a standout gospel track. Sentore expressed his excitement about working with
Mike Kayihura, noting that collaborating with such talented artists was a dream
come true. "Mike immediately connected with the song, and it was an
incredible experience working together," he said.
Sentore also plans to
hold a special album launch event in Kigali for his Rwandan audience before
taking the album on tour in Europe. He emphasized that the album is for all
Rwandans, both at home and abroad, as it celebrates the richness of Rwandan
culture and the people who have inspired him.
The album is not just a
personal reflection but also a cultural statement, deeply rooted in the legacy
of his grandfather, Sentore Athanase. "My grandfather gifted me the love
for my country, our traditions, and cultural songs. This album is my way of
honoring him and everyone who has played a role in my life," Sentore
added.
