The Ministry of Health has launched a Marburg vaccination campaign, targeting frontline health workers, to curb the spread of the deadly virus. The vaccination drive began on Sunday, with medical staff, especially those exposed to high-risk environments, being the first recipients
Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, confirmed
that this is not the first time the vaccine has been used and expressed
confidence in its effectiveness to combat Marburg. He emphasized that the vaccine
is a critical tool in the ongoing fight to eliminate the virus in Rwanda.
State Minister for Health, Dr. Yvan Butera, reassured
the public that the Marburg vaccine has undergone rigorous testing since its
introduction in 2018 and has proven safe. He noted that the vaccine does not
cause any side effects and that it quickly boosts immunity after
administration.
Dr. Butera explained that the vaccine is administered
in a single dose and is highly effective, with immunity levels reaching 95-96%
within a week. He further highlighted that mobile clinics will be used to bring
the vaccine closer to the people, ensuring that those in remote areas can also
receive it.
The campaign, backed by the Sabin Vaccine Institute from the United States, aims to protect health workers and the general population, with 700 doses already available and more expected.
The Ministry of
Health remains optimistic that the virus will be eradicated soon, urging the
public to avoid misinformation and embrace vaccination.
