Rwanda's President and Commander-in-Chief of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), Paul Kagame, has dismissed several senior military officers, including Major General Martin Nzaramba and Colonel Dr. Etienne Uwimana, along with 19 other officers.
This announcement was
made public in a statement released by the RDF on Friday night, August 30,
2024. According to the statement, the President has ordered the discharge of
these senior officers and the termination of contracts for 195 junior soldiers.
Major General (Ret.) Martin Nzaramba, one of the dismissed officers, has held various roles in the military, including leading the Nasho Military School. He was also among the generals sent into retirement by President Kagame. Born in Mpigi, Uganda, in 1967, Nzaramba was part of the forces that contributed to Rwanda's liberation and the end of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
Colonel Dr. Etienne Uwimana, also dismissed, was recently appointed as the head of the Radiology Department at the Military Hospital in Kanombe. This move comes a day after President Kagame's meeting with senior military officers to discuss national peace and security.
