Rwandan music legends Muyango Jean Marie and Cécile Kayirebwa received the prestigious “Music in Africa Honorary Award 2024” for their remarkable contributions to promoting traditional music and nurturing young talent.
The awards ceremony took
place during the Access 2024 conference, hosted in Kigali for the first time,
following previous editions held in countries like Kenya.
Organized by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF), these awards recognize individuals who have significantly advanced music and culture across Africa.
Muyango and Kayirebwa
join the ranks of past recipients, such as Senegal's Baaba Maal and Tanzania’s
Saida Karoli. The event also acknowledged Rwanda’s Ministry of Youth and Arts
Development for its support of creative industries.
After accepting his
award, Muyango expressed gratitude for the recognition and reflected on his
journey. “This is my life’s work, a gift I’ve nurtured with love. My music
draws deeply from my Rwandan heritage,” he said, attributing his artistic
foundation to his mentor, Sentore Athanase, and the group Muyango n’Imitari,
with whom he collaborated on timeless songs.
Kayirebwa, an icon of
Rwandan traditional music, also celebrated the honor, emphasizing the
importance of cultural preservation. Both artists highlighted how their music
has served as a bridge to connect generations, inspiring pride in Rwanda’s
heritage.
The Access conference
brought together musicians, cultural leaders, and industry stakeholders from
over 50 countries, providing a platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and
performances. Delegates explored Kigali’s cultural landmarks, participated in workshops,
and discussed strategies to elevate African music on a global
scale.
First launched in 2016, Access has become a flagship event for the Music In Africa Foundation, celebrating the continent’s rich musical diversity. The conference, conducted in English, French, and Swahili, continues to amplify African voices, connecting artists with audiences and investors worldwide.
