On September 26, 2024, President Paul Kagame officiated the swearing-in ceremony of 20 new Senators, joining 6 others whose terms are ongoing. Following the oath-taking, the Senate elected its leadership, with Dr. François-Xavier Kalinda re-elected as President of the Senate.
Dr. Kalinda, first appointed by the
President in January 2023, is an experienced legislator with a background in
law, having served in the East African Legislative Assembly and held academic
roles at the University of Rwanda. He has also authored various books and
research publications.
Senator
Solina Nyirahabimana, a seasoned diplomat and former Minister of Gender and
Family Promotion, was elected Vice President in charge of legal affairs and
government oversight. She has served in numerous high-profile positions,
including as an Ambassador and legal advisor to the president.
The
Senate's second Vice President, in charge of finance, Alvera Mukabaramba, is a
medical doctor with a long political career that began in 1999. She previously
served as a member of Rwanda’s transitional legislature and as Secretary of
State in the Ministry of Local Government.
