Dusabimana Israel Reveals How Joel Karekezi Paved His Path to 15+ Films – WATCH VIDEO

Dusabimana Israel, a name synonymous with contemporary Rwandan cinema, has emerged as a prominent figure in the film industry over the past 15 years. Known for his impactful contributions both behind the scenes and in front of the camera, Dusabimana's work has become a staple in the world of film.

His notable scripts include "My Insight," "Agahinda Ka Liza," "Ishusho ya Papa," and "Sacred Love," demonstrating his versatile storytelling prowess. Additionally, he has been instrumental in directing the popular TV film "Indoto," which continues to captivate audiences on Rwanda Television.

Raised with a passion for music, Dusabimana began his artistic journey in Sunday School and later discovered his talent for songwriting during his high school years. His early work in gospel music, including the song "Umuvumo" which aired on Radio Umucyo, showcased his deep-seated belief in spiritual expression through art. In an interview with InyaRwanda, Dusabimana revealed that much of his film and songwriting inspiration comes from his own life experiences. He emphasizes the importance of authentic storytelling, noting that creating relatable content is key to resonating with audiences, especially when dealing with themes outside one's personal experience.

Dusabimana's journey into filmmaking was significantly shaped by Joel Karekezi, a notable figure in Rwandan cinema. Karekezi, renowned for his award-winning film "The Mercy Of The Jungle," provided Dusabimana with invaluable guidance and training. Karekezi's advice on crafting compelling narratives and the rigorous process of script development was instrumental in shaping Dusabimana’s career. With over 15 films to his name, Dusabimana's evolution as a filmmaker was further refined through his training and mentorship under Karekezi’s esteemed guidance.

Currently, Dusabimana is preparing to release his latest film, "Sacred Love," which reflects his ambition to elevate Rwandan cinema to an international level. Filmed in Rwanda and Tanzania, this English-language production features a diverse cast from Europe and America.

The film's development was supported by Pascal Duke, who not only invested in the project but also authored a companion book titled "Sacred Love." Both the film and the book aim to present a unique Rwandan perspective to the global audience, blending cultural narratives with universal themes. As Dusabimana continues to push boundaries and explore new creative horizons, his contributions to cinema remain a testament to the evolving landscape of Rwandan art.
