British singer Adele accused of copying lyrics of her new hit song “Hello”

According to fans of Tom Waits, the 27-year-old British star has ripped off lyrics from his 1970s hit Martha, with words similar although clearly not exactly the same. His song has the same theme as hers: a former flame calling a past lover, and in the track he sings:

'Hello, hello there, is this Martha? This is old Tom Frost / And I am calling long distance, don't worry 'bout the cost / 'Cause it's been forty years or more, now Martha please recall / Meet me out for coffee, where we'll talk about it all.'

Adele's Hello begins in a similar way, as she croons: 'Hello, it's me / I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet / To go over, everything / They say that time's supposed to heal ya, but I ain't done much healing.' Even if the words to each song aren't quite the same, there is a markedly similar theme.

Martha featured on the 65-year-old US singing legend's classic album 1973 Closing Time and, while it has been over 40 years since it was produced, fans have noted the likeness between that and Adele's new single.

Music lovers took to Twitter to remark on the similarities, with one fan writing: 'The new Adele song (which I've finally heard) is essentially just 'Martha' by Tom Waits tho isn't it.'

Another added: 'Adele's 'Hello' is pretty much another version of Tom Waits's 'Martha.''

'Just copped that Adele's Hello is a copy of Tom Waits' Martha,' another noted on the social network.

These comparisons come after producer Greg Kurstin, who worked closely with Adele on the new track, admitted that she was inspired by Waits. “She didn't want to just go through and write a pop song with any particular formula. We talked about Tom Waits and different storytellers like that.” he confessed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

He added: “I think that was the idea, that we wanted to do something that was very honest about where she was at right now, and she wanted to do something that was real and believable. “

Meanwhile, Adele has continued to smash records with the epic comeback single, selling more than 1.1million digital songs in the first week and becoming the first song ever to break the 1million download mark on the Billboard charts.

Adele also roundly beat Canadian teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, whose latest single Sorry sold 276,800 downloads in its debut week, taking second place, according to data released by Nielsen Music on Monday for the past week.

Hello is the first single from Adele's upcoming new album 25, to be released this month, and follows a four-year break from music after her "21" album won six Grammy awards and sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

The catchy song was streamed 47.5 million times globally on Spotify, making it the most-streamed song over a week in the online streaming platform's history. The music video also broke records at entertainment platform VEVO, delivering more than 27 million views in the first 24 hours after its release last week.
