President Paul Kagame expressed his gratitude to the over 1,200 delegates gathered in Kigali for the 2nd AfCFTA Business Forum, particularly commending those who traveled to Rwanda despite the ongoing Marburg virus outbreak. He assured the participants that Rwanda is taking all necessary measures to control the situation.
President Kagame officially opened the forum, held at the Kigali Convention Centre, and acknowledged the crucial support Rwanda has received from partners like the Africa CDC in combating the virus.
“I want to thank all of you for being here,” President Kagame said. He Added “Rwanda is doing everything in its power to fight this virus, but
none of this would be possible without the assistance we’ve received.”
The first cases of
Marburg in Rwanda were reported on September 27, 2024. To date, there have been
13 fatalities, 14 recoveries, and 58 confirmed cases. Efforts are ongoing to
contain the outbreak, including vaccination for high-risk individuals.
The three-day forum, running from October 9-11, 2024, is attended by government officials, private sector leaders, business representatives, and entrepreneurs.
The goal of the
AfCFTA Business Forum is to accelerate the implementation of Africa’s
continental free trade area, which connects 54 countries and is the world’s
largest free trade zone.
Rwanda has been a key
player in AfCFTA, already benefiting from its trade opportunities and aiming to
increase its export revenue from $3.5 billion to $7.3 billion.
