Belgian cyclist Aldo Taillieu from Lotto Dstny Devo Team emerged victorious in the first stage of the 2025 Tour du Rwanda, marking the 17th edition of the race since it became an international event in 2009.
The race officially kicked off on Sunday,
February 23, 2025, at 11:30 AM,
inaugurated by the President of the
Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame,
alongside the President of the
International Cycling Union (UCI), David Lappartient.
The first stage, an individual time trial (ITT) covering a 3.4 km route, started at BK Arena and finished at the Stade gates. The first rider to hit the
road was Nzafashwanayo Jean Claude
from the Centre Mondial du Cyclisme (CMC)
team, followed by the rest of the 69 riders,
departing at one-minute intervals.
Aldo
Taillieu recorded the fastest
time, finishing in 3 minutes and
48 seconds, earning him the yellow
jersey as the overall leader. The best-performing Rwandan was Masengesho Vainqueur from Team Rwanda, who finished 31st, 23 seconds behind the winner.
The race will continue on Monday with the second stage, a 158
km route from Rukomo to Kayonza.
Riders will start at 11:00 AM
and are expected to finish around 2:00 PM.
