Kigali witnessed a historic musical night as Grammy-winning artist John Legend headlined the second edition of Global Citizen’s Move Africa concert on Friday, February 21, 2025, at BK Arena. The sold-out event saw around ten thousand fans singing along to the melodies of one of the world’s most celebrated musicians.

Despite pressure from Human Rights Watch (HRW) to cancel his performance due to alleged security concerns in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), John Legend went ahead with his much-anticipated show.

On February 7, 2025, HRW sent an email urging him to withdraw, citing Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebel group, which has been active in eastern DRC since 2022.

Nigerian artist Tems, who was also scheduled to perform in Rwanda, responded by canceling her concert, expressing regret over her lack of awareness of the regional tensions. However, John Legend disregarded these calls and stood firm in his decision to perform.

Taking the stage at BK Arena, the 46-year-old artist expressed his excitement, stating, “I am so proud to be here for my first-ever performance in East Africa and Rwanda. We are here because we love you.” He then delivered an electrifying setlist featuring his chart-topping hits, including All of Me, Love Me Now, Tonight, Ordinary People, and Green Light.

The concert reinforced his belief in music as a unifying force, transcending political controversies. With his powerful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, John Legend left an indelible mark on Kigali, making his debut in East Africa a night to remember.
