Rwandan singer Boukuru Christiane has been named among the 10 finalists for the 2025 Prix Découvertes RFI, a prestigious African music competition. She revealed that her decision to compete was fueled by her eligibility and the desire to follow in the footsteps of Yvan Buravan, who won the award in 2018.
Boukuru, who recently
released her debut album, has been making waves in the music scene, performing
at various international festivals over the past two years. She explained that
she officially submitted her application in October 2024, joining an
initial list of 40 artists before making it to the final top 10.
"I’m extremely happy
and grateful," Boukuru said. "This award was won by the late Yvan
Buravan, and that alone was a strong enough reason for me to enter. But beyond
that, I believe I have what it takes to win. My goal is to establish myself
internationally, and this is the first big step."
Boukuru emphasized that
her application was backed by her strong portfolio, including an album, live
performances, and the fact that she represents a French-speaking nation—all
key criteria for eligibility. She encouraged her fans to support her by voting
online, as public votes will play a crucial role in determining the winner.
Voting is open until February 16, 2025, on the RFI website.
The competition jury, led
by Angélique Kidjo, will announce the winner on February 18, 2025. The
champion will receive €10,000 (about 10 million Rwandan francs), along
with a continent-wide tour and a performance in Paris, France. The
competition, which has crowned stars like Tiken Jah Fakoly, Rokia Traoré,
and Didier Awadi, remains one of the most prestigious platforms for emerging
African artists.
If Boukuru wins, she will
become only the second Rwandan artist to claim the title after Buravan. “I
believe I have everything needed to win,” she said confidently. “This trophy is
ours!”
