Rwanda’s National Football Team, Amavubi Stars, has been invited to participate in the Mapinduzi Cup, scheduled to take place in Zanzibar from January 3 to January 13, 2025. The tournament is organized to help nations prepare for the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).
The Secretary General of the Rwanda Football
Federation (FERWAFA), Kalisa Adolphe, also known as ‘Camarade,’ confirmed the
invitation but noted that the federation is still awaiting confirmation on
whether Rwanda will compete in CHAN 2024.
On Sunday, the Confederation of African
Football (CAF) released a list of teams that have qualified for CHAN 2024, set
to be hosted in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. While Rwanda initially appeared on
this list, CAF later issued a correction that excluded the Amavubi.
Despite this correction, various media
outlets and football analysts have speculated that Rwanda may still secure a
spot in the tournament. The confirmed teams for CHAN 2024 include Angola,
Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Congo, DR Congo, Guinea, Mauritania,
Morocco, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and Zambia, alongside host
nations Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
Speculations arise from the fact that some
nations opted out of the CHAN 2024 qualifiers. Given that Rwanda finished
second in the CECAFA qualifiers behind Sudan, there is a possibility that both
Rwanda and Sudan could be granted spots in the tournament.
FERWAFA has yet to make an official statement regarding these developments. If the qualification is confirmed, participating in the Mapinduzi Cup would provide Amavubi with a critical opportunity to prepare for CHAN 2024.
