President Paul Kagame has declared that the time has come for Africa to embrace and integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasizing that the continent cannot afford to be left behind again.
AI in Africa: A Step
Towards Progress
In today's world, almost
everything is powered by the internet and advanced by artificial intelligence
(AI). Recognizing this, Rwanda is hosting the Global AI Summit on Africa, a high-level conference focused on
AI's role in shaping Africa’s future.
The summit has drawn key
leaders, including President Kagame,
President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of
Togo, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf,
Chairperson of the African Union, and Kenya’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, among others.
In his opening remarks, President Kagame emphasized that Africa must
take charge of its AI development rather than remain a passive observer.
“AI
is already proving its benefits across different sectors, improving efficiency
and reducing human error. Africa will not be left behind this time. We must
embrace innovation, foster collaboration, and compete on the global stage.”
The Urgency of AI
Adoption
While AI has
significantly transformed industries worldwide, its accessibility remains
uneven. President Kagame stressed that Africa must act now to bridge this gap
and maximize AI's potential.
“The
opportunities for innovation on our continent are immense. If harnessed
properly, AI could multiply these opportunities exponentially,”
he added.
Rwanda has already laid
the groundwork for AI adoption by establishing research institutions offering Master’s and PhD programs in
AI-related fields, further demonstrating the country’s commitment to
technological advancement.
A Vision Shared by
African Leaders
President Kagame's vision
aligns with that of Togo’s President
Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, who echoed the sentiment that Africa should
be a global hub for innovation.
“I
strongly believe that Africa can be the birthplace of groundbreaking
innovations, both for itself and the rest of the world,”
said President Gnassingbé.
Shaping Africa’s AI
Future
Held at Kigali Convention Centre, the Global AI Summit on Africa brings
together top industry leaders, policymakers, and AI experts from across the
continent and beyond. The discussions are centered on leveraging AI to drive economic growth and technological transformation
in Africa.
With bold leadership and
strategic investment, Africa is positioning itself not just as a participant
but as a key player in the global AI
revolution.
President Kagame
emphasized that Africa must take the lead in embracing AI technology.
He highlighted Rwanda's
investment in AI research centers offering Master's and PhD programs.
The summit brought
