Born in Somanya Krobo, Ghana, Joseph Sackey is a
22-year-old footballer whose journey in football reflects his vast experience
and deep passion for the game, which began in his childhood. Growing up
watching football, he was nurtured by various individuals, including his
mentor, Chris, who helped him develop his talent.
Joseph Sackey has played for several clubs in
Ghana, including Tema Youth FC, Proud United, New Edubiase United, and Wa
Suntaa SC. While playing for Wa Suntaa SC, Sackey showcased exceptional
versatility, often taking on roles in three different positions during a single
match.
Primarily a defensive midfielder, Sackey revealed
to InyaRwanda that he is also capable of playing as a defender, a position he
assumed while at Wa Suntaa SC due to an injured teammate. Moreover, his
adaptability extends to goalkeeping; during a match where their goalkeeper was
sent off with a red card and no substitutes were available, Sackey volunteered
to play as the goalkeeper for the second half. These instances highlight his
skill, versatility, and determination to support his team.
Despite his multi-positional capabilities, Sackey’s
favorite role remains the defensive midfielder position, often referred to as
the "number 6."
Sackey frequently reminisces about memorable
matches he played in Ghana. Notable highlights of his career include games
against Rayon Sports earlier this year in Kigali and a match against APR FC
last year, where his exceptional performance caught the attention of Rayon
Sports’ coach.
Speaking to InyaRwanda, Sackey shared his surprise
at how quickly he gained recognition in Rwanda through Rayon Sports’ coach,
team officials, journalists, and social media. This acknowledgment has fueled
his motivation to work harder and improve his skills.
After Rayon Sports secured a 2-1 victory over
Muhazi United, Sackey was seen conversing with Brazilian coach Robertinho, who
reportedly expressed interest in signing him for Rayon Sports.
In his interview, Joseph Sackey emphasized his
aspiration to help Rayon Sports win the Rwandan championship. He said, “I
really love Rwanda; it’s a beautiful country, and I want to learn a lot,
especially about football here. My goal is to develop my career further, and if
I join Rayon Sports, my aim will be to compete for the championship.”
A player who values rest, avoids injury-prone
activities, and prioritizes prayer, Sackey attributes his achievements to his
faith in God, which he considers the foundation of his endeavors. He aspires to
set a positive example for other players, particularly those beginning their
football careers.
