Amavubi striker Gitego Arthur has expressed his desire to part ways with Kenyan club AFC Leopards due to the challenges he has faced during his time there.
Gitego joined AFC Leopards in February 2024 from Marines FC in Rwanda’s Rubavu District. Initially, he performed exceptionally well, scoring crucial goals for the team. However, his journey took a turn for the worse following management issues and changes in coaching staff.
“I wanted to leave when these challenges
began, but they refused. I had other offers from different teams, but they
didn’t understand. They kept me because they lacked enough strikers,” Gitego
revealed.
The dismissal of the coach who brought him
into the team further destabilized his position. Despite having signed a
two-year contract, Gitego said he had hoped to play just one season before
making a move to Europe.
Beyond football challenges, Gitego highlighted
the tough living conditions in Kenya, especially for foreign players. “I don’t
feel safe, whether in terms of security or the relationship with fans. When
things go wrong, fans can even storm the pitch to attack you,” he shared.
After sustaining an injury that kept him off the field for over two months, Gitego made another attempt to leave the club but was again met with resistance.
“I wrote a letter requesting to terminate my
contract, but they didn’t respond. Now, I have no choice but to complete my
contract with them,” he explained.
Despite the setbacks, Gitego remains hopeful about his future. “I still have dreams of playing at a higher level in Europe. I believe that opportunity will come, and I will keep working hard,” he said.
