Burundian comedian Alfred Aubin Mugenzi, popularly known as Kigingi, has addressed his absence from the March 2024 Gen-Z Comedy anniversary show in Kigali, clarifying that it wasn’t due to political tensions but a scheduling conflict.

Kigingi, a celebrated figure in East African comedy, is known for his unique storytelling style that resonates across the region.

Speaking to InyaRwanda, Kigingi revealed that he had two commitments on March 21, 2024 the Gen-Z Comedy show and another gig involving high-profile government stakeholders. "I informed Fally Merci [the organizer] ahead of time that my plans might change. When the event flyer was released, the other client confirmed their event, making me choose one,” he explained.

Kigingi emphasized that his decision was purely professional, not influenced by strained relations between Rwanda and Burundi. “Fally Merci understood my situation because we’ve worked together before. I appreciated his flexibility,” Kigingi added.

Despite political tensions affecting cross-border relations, Kigingi remains a regular performer in Rwanda. Married to a Rwandan, he has graced several major comedy shows in the country, including Seka Live and Comedy Knights. "For us who aren’t in politics, we hope life continues as normal. I’m here to bring joy, not politics," he stated.

Kigingi is now set to headline the Gen-Z Comedy show on November 28, 2024, at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village. Fans eagerly anticipate his return, where he will join other performers in celebrating the show’s two-year milestone.

As tensions between the two nations linger, Kigingi’s ability to navigate professional commitments across borders reflects his dedication to uniting audiences through laughter, transcending political divides.
