Pope Francis backs Civil Unions for Gay Couples, and calls for same-sex civil union law. His words though were not official as they appeared in a new documentary “Francesco” directed by Evgeny Afineevsky and premiered for the first time at the Rome Film Festival on Wednesday.
According to his comments in this documentary; he clearly called for legislation to protect them. He said: "Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They are children of God and have a right to a family," “Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it.”
"What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered."
And then added: “I stood up for that.”
Pope Francis became the first pontiff to support civil unions for homosexuals.
Receiving applause from gay Catholics; observers say the comments are his clearest remarks yet on same-sex relationships, but conservatives are asking for clarification given the Vatican’s official teaching on the matter.
This will surely exacerbate existing divisions in the church.
