Pope Francis has provided $ 121 million in aid to victims of terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique.

The aid comes at the behest of Bishop Luis Fernando Lisboa of the diocese of Pemba, who had called on the pope to help thousands of people displaced by Islamist attacks.

Since 2017, the militants have continued to carry out ‘animal attacks’ in the oil-rich province.  About 430,000 people are internally displaced by the attacks.

Bishop Lisboa has been campaigning for a long time for the world to unite and support Cabo Delgado.  He told reporters that the donation from Pope Francis was going to be used to build clinics in Montepuez and Chiure districts.

Last week, delegates from the General Assembly of the Bishops of South Africa visited the province of Cabo Delgado, at the invitation of Bishop Lisboa.  The envoys called for an immediate end to the insecurity in the area and for immediate release of those displaced.
