RWANDA MOVIE AWARDS 2016: Ishusho Arts unveils the Awards leading category Nominees

"People's Choice Award", the leading category in Rwanda Movie Awards for Actor and Actress who was popular for their appearance in films and TV Series in last year for the 5th Awards edition was announced last evening.

Presented to the media last evening on Feb 2 by Ishusho Arts president Mr. Jackson Mucyo who also pointed out to the new changes in the Awards, the nominees in Female and Male categories who are to be chosen by film fans as Popular Actor/Actress are:

As announced by Mr. Jackson, the awards have seen some changes from the trophy design, awards categories, etc.

Some awards categories were discarded while other categories perspectives changed. The categories which will no longer be  awarded since the 5th edition are: Best Lyrics (the award was presented to the Actor or actress who made it best at dialogue performance on screen), Best Actor & Actress in Gospel Movie and TV Series as well as Best Old Actor and Best Old Actress will also no longer be awarded.

The other changes in awards categories will see the Best Achiever Award which was inserted controversially in 2014 awarding the sponsor of the awards will be awarded to the one who made the achievement in the industry as a ‘practitioner’ not a sponsor as it was harshly criticized before.

The -Best Actor or Actress in Action Movie(s) the award which was inserted in 2014, presented to the actor or actress who performed ‘best’ action choreography in ACTION MOVIE will be awarded if only the selection committee receive the action movies, and if no action movie(s) submitted, the award will not be awarded.

Rwanda Movie Awards Key dates:

2/2/2016: Nominations for People’s Choice Award category

5/2/2016: Opening of People’s Choice Award voting through Internet and SMS Voting.

5/2/2016: Submission of films for consideration in other categories. Films accepted are Feature films, short films, documentary films and TV episodes produced between January 1 and Dec. 31, 2015.

20/2/2016: Announcement of nominees of films and other categories; and voting starts the same day.

14/3-24/3/2016: Rwanda Movie Week and Nominees Outreach

25/3/2016: Voting Closed.

26/3/2016: Awards Ceremonies.

For People’s Choice Awards voting, the internet and SMS voting hold 30% each while Nominees Outreach votes hold 40% of total votes.

Mr. Jackson, concluded that, “This is the 5th anniversary for Rwanda Movie Awards. For us, this is the time to look back and assess ourselves, what the impact did the award make on Rwandan film industry so far? If no one, how can we catch up?”

Hosted by Ishusho Arts, Rwanda Movie Awards is an annual award ceremony which recognizes the achievement in Rwandan film industry. Presented since 2012, the Rwanda Movie Awards is the first awarding activity in Rwandan film industry (apart from Silver Back Awards in Rwanda Film Festival). The awards have been a subject of controversy, where some industry insiders have been criticizing the way nominations are made and the way the awards are presented in some categories without any known nominees contending for the Award.
