14th March was a day like others for some, but it was a nightmare in the southern part of Africa. Cyclone Idai did an unimaginable damage in Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Madagascar. They are facing a huge humanitarian crisis, with millions of people in need of urgent help.

Let’s first define a cyclone: in meteorology, a cyclone is a large scale of air mass that rotates inwards to an area of low barometric pressure with an anticlockwise or clockwise circulation. The cyclone idai was rotating with clockwise depression because it hit the southern hemisphere. The huge cyclone Idai is said to be one of the worst tropical cyclones to affect Africa and the southern hemisphere as a whole. It destroyed human lives, infrastructures, crops, leaving millions of people in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in terrible livelihoods. The most affected area is Beira, central Mozambique. More than 700 people have been pronounced dead and death toll is expected to rise as thousands of people are still missing under the floods and mud.

Many lives perished in cyclone Idai. The floods are yet to dry up in many areas

The rescue mission remains cumbersome as many roads have been ripped off by the big storm and floods, a big number of people are in need of help for basic needs like food, shelter, clean water and the like. Waterborne diseases are also a big threat in the situation, with 5 people already testing positive. The World Health Organisation is sending 900,000 doses of oral vaccination of cholera to support Mozambique, which was mostly affected by cyclone Idai. The government of Mozambique has organised a burial of about 40 victims as they were already decomposing.

The UN says that at least 300,000,000$ is what it would take to relieve the lives affected by cyclone Idai. Some international organizations have tried to help, but there is still a shortage of supply when it comes to basic needs needed to soothe cyclone Idai victims.
